History of Niska-Day

The Niskayuna Community Action Program (N-CAP) was begun in the spring of 1980 with a report to the community on the mental health needs of the Niskayuna School District.  A recurring theme included in that report was the need for something that would help establish an identity for the residents of Niskayuna and the families associated with  the Niskayuna School District.  Several ideas were expressed to fulfill this need.  The first idea that met with an enthusiastic response from all participants, was the concept of a “Town/School District” wide celebration.  The idea first emerged of a parade through the Town culminating in a gathering of all the Town and School District residents at what was perceived as the center of the Town, the High School.  The idea generated so much enthusiasm that people began planning that night for what has become the  “NiskaDay” annual celebration!
